Dr. Caplan has been performing a broad range of general surgery in Houston since 1985. His has treated thousands of patients at Texas Medical Center hospitals. Dr. Caplan attended the University of Texas in Austin and received his medical degree from Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, graduating Alpha Omega Alpha. His general surgery residency was in San Antonio,Texas at the affiliated hospitals of the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. He has engaged in multiple post graduate courses, training in laparoscopic and advanced laparoscopic procedures. He has been certified and twice recertified by the American Board of Surgery, and holds active certification through 2017. He is a member of multiple medical and surgical societies and serves in hospital administrative positions and committees with interests in credentialing and surgical quality. He has received teaching awards, most recently from the Methodist Surgical Residency in 2007. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and Senior Fellow of the American Leadership Forum.
Dr. Caplan comes from a large family of Houston physicians. His father is a retired Ophthalmologist and a Houston native, his mother is a retired nurse. Three younger brothers practice ophthalmology, nuclear medicine and neonatology in Houston. He is married to Dr. Leslie Cohan who practices obstetric and gynecology at Texas Woman's Hospital. His father and sister-in- law are pediatricians. He has an aunt who is a dermatologist and an uncle a gynecologist.
Two teenagers make life interesting in the Caplan home. Blessed with a large extended family in Houston, Dr. Caplan enbraces strong family values and knows how important they are in times of medical need.
